Great Story and GREAT IDEA for a class next time I think that your class should be limited to BBQ joints in towns of population between x and y say between 0 and 100K that way you get to see places that are not commercialized ie Jacks, Corkys and Sticky fingers Just a thought

What a great paper to write! We recently went to The Shed near Ocean Springs, Mississippi. It has been featured on the Food channel - Drive in's, Diners and Dives. All the BBQ was good with the exception of the country style ribs, which seemed a little tough. The babyback ribs were wonderful! It's a fun, party type of atmosphere that you would probably really enjoy visiting.

To the Schroeders: We also live in Bixby, OK and like to ride our Harley out to Buffalo's in Sperry. They have fantastic ribs. The sauce is not like NC sauce which is more of a vinegar type. They are in a small trailer and only have picnic tables - no inside sitting. Also, if you are in the area, the Riverwalk in Jenks sponsors "Rock N BBQ on the Water" sometime in late October. For $10 you can sample several different BBQ contestants.

We are being held BBQ hostage in OK! (no good BBQ!) Have moved all around and the Commissary in Memphis was our Fri. night thing! RIP to Melton's BBQ in Rocky Mount NC, it was the Best!!!!!Sniff Look it up on line and read about the people who still miss it. Lived in MN and NY, poor folks just don't know good BBQ! We dream for Carolina BBQ. My husband wants to quit his job and go with you all. Well done boys. The Schroeders

Glad you guys ate BBQ at Lexington Barbecue in January. Did you know that they provided BBQ for President Reagan and the World Summit meeting in Williamsburg years ago. They requested more, but were told that it took hours to make. Best BBQ in the WORLD. Come back in October when they hold the BBQ festival. Just try it. I grew up there. Eaten it all my life.

Jay HIll said:   March 2, 2009 8:59 pm PST
Glad to see you got to eat at "The Monk" or as it's called Lexington BBQ #1. It is and always will be #1 with my family. I've been eating there nearly all my 43 years on this Earth!

Read about you in today's Winston-Salem (NC) Journal. Great job. I'm about 25 miles north of Lexington -- BBQ capital of the South -- where you hit 2 of the best.

Congratulations bbq boys. You have stepped over the velvet rope and entered the BBQ Party Room known as Sweatman's BBQ between Holly Hill and Eutawville SC. Growing up in the area, Saturday's meant my Aunt Alice would stop by Sweatman's for "To Go" plates. The BBQ has a mustard based sauce. Each plate came with a couple of ribs, skin, copped pork, pickles, hash & rice, BBQ slaw, and soft white loaf bread. This que is cooked the old fashioned way over hickory and oak wood only. No gas cooking here. Great food, great location in the old farm house, and great memories.

You college boys are smarter than you look to come up with a scheme like that. ;-) Seriously, check out BBQJEW.COM if you want some more info on NC barbecue. A

Thanks for using the song I wrote as your #1 song. Your project was a GREAT idea...how else am I gonna know where to go for the best bar-b-q in the South? Thanks, Ed King www.edking.net Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2006 I wrote the Stratocaster riff and all the music for "Sweet Home Alabama"...the best song of all time! To me it is, anyway.

Thank you for sharing your exploits with us. It was an interesting read. Another interesting read is "SmokeStacked Lightning" by: Lolis Eric Elie. It details the journey and history of BBQ. I'm currently reading this book and at times I find that I can't put it down. I also have a small Blog at www.smokindavesbbqreview.info, where I try to critique the status of 'Que in Houston, Texas. Here it's a little different, because it's mainly Beef Brisket, Sausage, Ribs, and Chicken, but there are a few places in Houston that does serve the coveted Pulled Pork sammy. If you all are ever this far West, look me up and we'll do Dinner. Again thank you for sharing your journey and hopefully you all got good grades for your efforts.

If you get over to the Columbus, GA area check out Macon Rd. BBQ, Country's, 13th Street and Mike N Ed's. These are all great places in Columbus.

Loved the whole premise of this project but would have loved to seen your grading of Sweatmans in Holly Hill-it is by far the best bar-b-que our family has ever had and the best atmosphere with the old farmhouse!

Maria said:   February 18, 2009 12:14 am PST
Thanks for sharing your research. Love my TN bbq, but here are 2 more GREATS ... The Salt Lick outside Austin, TX and The Sugar Shack on Ocean Isle Beach, NC (Jamaican style) Both are legendary and soooo tender they fall off the bone!

I read about y'all in the Daytona Beach News-Journal! Need a fifth member? Sweatmans BBQ in Holly Hill, SC is by far the best cue on the planet! Dukes BBQ on Whitman Street in Orangeburg, SC ain't bad either! I live in Florida and all we have here is sorry old Sonny's. In the world of cue, South Carolina is the capital. God Bless pork, good wood, mustard, and DIXIE!!!

Fantastic journey, Guys! It's now February 16th and read about your "BBQ Hunt" in the ORLANDO (Florida) SENTINEL. But.....as a BBQ addict for over 50 years now, you guys missed the South's best BBQ!! You've got to go to Cherry Log, North (maybe South) Carolina and go to the "Pink Pig" BBQ restaurant. You will never forget THAT BBQ. Want ice tea?? It comes in a ball jar with a handle! Need to get rid of that beer or ice tea.......well...that's an adventure in itself out back!! Around the local Indian Harbour Beach area here in Florida, go to "Mee-Maw's".......... Good Luck......keep it going!!

Great job Matt and crew! In my BSC days, we were lucky to make it to Atlanta and back in one weekend. Glad you got to come to Nashville, but I'll tell you where the "really good" BBQ joints are hiding next time. Bring Holly with you too! Robert - BSC '82

BBQ was good but your improved writing was the real pay-off. Good writing requires clear thinking. It is obvious that you learned more than enough to earn a good grade in the course. Incidentally, I am the real Billy the Kid at www.LifesWrite.com

KWE said:   February 15, 2009 8:17 pm PST
Good job, guys. I bet it was fun. You all deserve an "A", and should continue your BBQ adventures. Check out these places when you get a chance: Fat Boys (Prattville, AL) Hancocks (Selma, AL) Carlislies (Bham, AL) Archibalds (Northport, AL) Larrys (Dothan, AL) Bill Spoons (Charlotte, NC) ....... to name a few!

Great idea, great execution & great documentation! I've eaten at several of your stops (my son's a sophomore at Alabama - Dreamland every visit!) but have to recommend Northeast Tennessee's Ridgewood, Barbecue in Bluff City if you plan a post-graduate advanced course. Check it out: http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Overview.aspx?RefID=446

Great idea guys! Learned about you in Saturday's Charlotte Observer and read the whole blog in one sitting tonight. From the number of responses it looks as if you could make a career out of this. Well done.

Hey, guys, great project! I grew up in Birmingham, but came to Memphis to go to college (Rhodes) and have lived here for nearly 50 years now. You ate at my favorite, the Germantown Commissary (the plural, by the way, is Commissaries, not Commissary's; the latter is the possessive form). Neely's is very good, as is Corky's, and the ribs at the Rendezvous (downtown) are at the top also. If possible, go to Texas for some beef brisket barbecue. I came to appreciate it when my son went to college there (Texas A&M). It's different from pork, but is really good also.

Susan Mealer said:   February 15, 2009 11:07 am PST
Great article in The Commercial Appeal today. Sorry to hear you didn't try the Rendezvous, but Neely's is one of my fav spots!

Grant said:   February 15, 2009 9:56 am PST
You should try Duke's BBQ in Walterboro, SC. As a Yankee it was the first and only Southern BBQ place I went to but it was really good.

Brian said:   February 15, 2009 9:14 am PST
You guys should try J's BBQ in Boiling Springs SC. The beef briskit & ribs are well worth the visit.

Fred said:   February 15, 2009 6:25 am PST
Good job. Y'all missed Mountain View BBQ, Columbus NC and Southside Smokehouse ,Landrum SC. Both are absolutely wonderful. MountainView Brisket is the best. In June we have the Blue Ridge BBQ in Tryon NC and Cookers from all over the country participate. You could write an "A+++ essay on that one

Donna Riggleman said:   February 15, 2009 6:16 am PST
What a learning experience! You guys are absolutely awesome for sharing your adventure. I just read yourstory in the Cumberland-News, Cumberland, Md. I use to live in Homewood and graduated from Choctaw County High School in Butler, Alabama. I'm now a retired teacher and love those WV 'Eers. I love southern pulled pork with a vinegar-based sauce and have found several places in my golfing ventures to the Myrtle Beach area that are mouth-watering. Congratulation, Guys, you all deserve and A-plus.

Hank & Patrice Humphrey said:   February 14, 2009 6:44 pm PST
When on I-75 above Atlanta stop off on exit 306 in Adairsville, cross 41 and eat at Characters Famous. It is the best in the area. Tell Michael, Hank sent you........

Grew up in Auburn AL, lived in Memphis for eight years and then in Ft Worth TX for nine. If you go down to Texas you have to try Angelos and The Railhead in Ft Worth.

Long live the BBQ Pit!!!

B Hayes said:   February 14, 2009 10:42 am PST
You should try Oh So Good BarBQ in Oneonta, Al, not everyone knows where oneonta is, but take hwy75 from Pinson north and it will carry you strait to Otown in about 30-40 minutes. This black man made so much money selling his famous BarBQ from his pull behind trailer in his front yard and at talladega that he was able to build the largest restraunt in Blount County. Not too far to try some of the BEST BarBQ you will ever eat.

Whitney said:   February 14, 2009 8:35 am PST
Saw an article in TheState paper this morning here in Columbia, SC. Just wanted to recommend two places: Shealy's BBQ in Batesburg-Leesville, SC and Just More BBQ in Pendleton, SC. Both are amazing and serve the best mustard-based bbq around!

Tom Washington said:   February 14, 2009 7:36 am PST
Well, you made page 9A in the Dallas Morning News on Feb. 14th but it doesn't appear that you have tasted Texas BBQ yet. Big omission!!

Lew Sellars said:   February 14, 2009 6:51 am PST
Just read the article about you guys in the Miami Herald. I hope you guys earned that well deserved "A". When reading the article, I conjured up memories of my experiences with the interim session at Southern. Best of luck to you all. Class of 1984!
