loved hearing about bbq my favorite meal. saw your story in the Tampa Tribune. can I suggest coming to Tampa for a taste of the good stuff. Hungry Harry's on N. 41 is a great place. An old red building with an American Flag painted on the roof. Last night the ribs were great! Keep up the good work, I know it's a hard job but somebody has to do it!

Although a child of the south and a major BBQ fan, I've lived in Miami for 30 years and have been starved for BBQ. Middle Tennessee BBQ is the best and I'm disappointed to see you only hit Memphis.

enjoyed the article in Tuscaloosa News and on the web site!

Great interim project, guys! I wish I could have done something like this back in my BSC days in the late 60's. But that was when the interim term was just starting and the projects were much less exciting and fun. I'm from Russellville originally, and know Art's family. I've been living in Illinois since 72, though, and I do miss good southern BBQ. Famous Dave's chain is about as close as I can find anywhere near me, although I'm beginning to like a local chain called The Patio. For your next trip, I just heard about a little place called Scotty's on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. I'll try it out for you later this year and let you know!

Great Job! I grew up in Tuscaloosa and have been in Memphis for about 16 years, it was great to see you guys hit both towns! Next time you are in Memphis, Bozo's in Mason, TN is EXCELLENT butt, and Cozy Corner in downtown Memphis has the best ribs! Rooll Tide!

Read your story on boston.com. Sounds like you had a great time on your academic adventure. Congratulations! Being originally from Clarksville, TN bbq is in my blood. I am slowly converting all of the northerner's from lobsta to delicious bbq. Best wishes SmokeyDavesbbq.com

I came across this on foxnews.com Tsk, tsk. You call yourselves fans of BBQ, but you don't go to Kansas City, the true home of BBQ? For shame! You need to come out here sometime so you can learn what *real* BBQ is about. On a side note, congratulations on the hard work :-)

Two Famous BBQ Spots in South Carolina: Carolina BBQ - Spartanburg, SC Big Dave's BBQ - Clemson, SC Big Dave used to cook for the Dallas Cowboys. Be sure to try the Cajun collard greens!

Awesome. I will have to check a couple of these out when I am down in Alabama this summer. I will check with my brother he may have some more hotspots where he lives east of Birmingham.

Great job guys keep up your travels and visit BILLY'S BBQ in Lexington ky

Great job guys!!!! All I can say is I'm jealous of your class. They didn't have anything likes this at UF or I would have been the first to sign up. If you're ever in this neck of the woods (east of Gville) you'll have to stop by Huckleberry's BBQ in Fanning Springs on US 19. It may be small, but it sure has some good "eats". God Bless ya'll.

This is an awesome site. You have probably started something here for other college students.

Good luck to you guys. Hope you get your A. As a Samford grad who has been in the business world for 25 years, I can attest to the fact that improved writing skills can be your best friend in your careers. Learn all you can about writing, proofread multiple times and don't trust "Spell Check." It doesn't know the difference in there and their. BTW--you might want to proof your website again. I wish you all the best!

Jealousy is insufficient to express how I feel. I live in California and dream of being so close to so many great BBQ places. My only advice is donâ??t marry a vegetarian and move to California, as there are slim pickings as far as BBQ. Hope you got an A.

Guys, GREAT class!! Hell, I'd have majored in BBQ-ology if I'd had the chance. I live in Mobile, AL (The Brick Pit) but have to say y'all need to go eating in the great states of MS and LA. There are some outstanding spots, like Sheds in Van Cleave, MS, where ambiance plays an important role in the visit. I must also (burp) disagree that PORK is the only real Southern BBQ. I like chicken, I'm a chicken hawk, and the bird makes a wonderful BBQ meat!! You now have my email address, I welcome any and all opinions on the subject. Don't forget the Tums!!!

Lynn said:   February 13, 2009 7:13 am PST
Bama gal living in Texas, saw your article in the Baytown paper. Great job and you did hit some of the best bbq in the south. Every time I go back home I have to eat at Bob Gibson's. Good luck on your college credit.

I enjoyed the ride. Maybe you can visit some of the bbqs up north someday. Dr. Lee is my vet. He is so wonderful. He is very proud of you Matt.

Guys, guys, guys! You've been all over the world looking for barbeque, and the best I've ever had is at the Top Hat in Blount Springs, just a few minutes up I-65. If you're ever in Virginia, Buzz & Ned's in Richmond is 1a on the list. Famous Dave's is another outstanding one, as well, even though it's a chain (believe it or not). Best regards, Larry Davis Richmond, VA (formerly, B'ham)

I love bbq myself. Corky's was great. I ate in Memphis, TN. I have to say not all franchises of bbq are the same quality. I love southern bbq, but the one in Muscle Shoals on Wilson dam rd is the BEST. I would not eat at the others. I have tried and been disappointed each time. I think if you keep this going, maybe you should add the bbq places that are different. Sometimes I wish I knew before I went to some.

I am a BSC alumna married to a BSC alumnus and mother of two current BSC students but, most of all right now, I am envious of you guys! What a clever and educational experience! I had one pretty unusual contracted Interim, but yours beats any I've ever heard of. You didn't drive quite this far, but if you are ever in the Asheville, NC, area don't miss 12 Bones. Great BBQ, wonderful veggies and oozing with atmosphere. Here in Tallahassee, the best pulled pork is what my husband takes all day smoking, seasoning, etc.

Jim Blackburn said:   February 5, 2009 8:42 am PST
As a BSC alumnus ('68) and expatriated Alabamian, who has spent the last 28 years in Colorado and California, your website has caused me to be overcome with homesickness for real Bar BQ, which sadly unavailbale west of let's say Oklahoma.

Alicia said:   February 5, 2009 8:24 am PST
When in Memphis, you have to eat at the Barbecue Shop on Madison Ave. I lived in Memphis for 4 years, and the Shop is the best place for pulled pork. The best ribs are at Rendezvous.

Sorry! forgot to state that those T-Shirts were created before the trip began. So it listed the stops that we planned on taking. A couple of which are not correct. The new T-Shirts will however have the correct restaurants listed.

Matt said:   January 30, 2009 2:39 pm PST
We did go to Lexington and absolutely loved it. No where else will you find the quality food and southern hospitality that we had there

Seth said:   January 30, 2009 1:13 pm PST
When in NC you have to go to Lexington Barbecue. The best Slaw I have ever had and the Pork skins will make you druel

Oklahoma Joes in Kansas City is perhaps the best in the world. Located in the back of a gas station, Okla Joe's takes bbq to another level. My opinion, but having eaten there, my initial reaction was that they ought to toss out eveything they know about bbq east of the Miss. river and start over. It was that good.

Kandi said:   January 27, 2009 9:20 pm PST
Too bad you didn't cross the mississippi.. you really missed some good BBQ in Kansas City, MO. Oklahoma Joe's and LC's BBQ. Oklahoma Joe's is just amazing.. and LC's has fabulous burnt ends and beans.. skip Gates- wayyyy overrated!

Scott said:   January 27, 2009 9:53 am PST
Hey guys, Cool project! I would have loved to have done that in college. Maybe now it can be a post-retirement project. Have you had the bbq chicken with white sauce at Miss Myra's in Cahaba Heights? It is fantastic! By the way, my wife is a BSC grad - class of '91.

Well done gents. I appreciate the attention to detail with all your videos and blogs. I did a 7-day tour last year through KC and Memphis and had the time of my life. I like your choice of restaurants, but I would have passed on Corky's and went with Central BBQ instead. Sorry to hear Charlie was closed, the ribs have a very unique flavor cooking over lump charcoal.

the goat man's real name was ches mccartney who passed away in 1998. he traveled all over georgia living in a peddlers wagon pulled by a team of goats, hence the name. i can recall seeing him go by from time to time in the early 1960's in dalton ga.

You need to venture a little further into Decatur and give Whitt's a try (Spring Ave. location, just off of the Beltline). Not your everyday north AL BBQ, because it has an excellent vinegar based sauce, and slaw. I just transported a family pack 3 1/2 hrs so I could have it for dinner!!

Gary said:   January 22, 2009 1:27 pm PST
On I-20, between Atlanta and Birmingham, just 20 minutes or so north of exit 185, is Cooter Brown's Rib Shack. It may be way too late to add it to this trip, but you guys owe it to yourselves to try the ribs there. Pecan-smoked goodness that's way better than anything Dreamland can dish out. It's on Hwy 204, just west of Jax State. It's a moral imperative that you eat there at least once before you die.

Bryan Huff said:   January 22, 2009 9:34 am PST
You all missed the best BBQ in Atlanta. Sam and Dave's BBQ earned top ratings from Zagat and has been voted the best in ATL for two years in a row. Try it next time you are in Marietta.

Michael said:   January 22, 2009 6:14 am PST
While in Auburn, AL you were 30 minutes away from some of the best bbq in the world - 13th St BBQ in Phenix City, AL. Great butts w/ mustard based hot sauce + their famous PORKCHOP sandwich which is a large cut of tenderloin on bun with choice of sauce (hot/mild) and bbq slaw. Sorry you missed it. Ever back this way stop in......
