Y'all have really missed out on your trip...Moonlite BBQ in Owensboro, KY is THE best. I have eaten BBQ in several states and none of them can compete with the Moonlite!

When in Athens, Fresh Air is ok but Jot 'Em Down is much better. Too bad JB's (ribs) closed down one New Years

be sure to visit the orginal sprayberrys in newnan and not the one on the highway. it's much more gooder, and one lewis frequented.

We enjoyed your story as reported in the Wilmington, NC paper today. A new publication "Holy Smoke - the big book of North Carolina BBQ" is a must read before completing your delicious project. Oh and dinner tonight is bbq'd chicken with Golden Rule sauce!

Also, please do not miss the many fine bbq establishments in the Columbus Ga. area.

Scott said:   January 19, 2009 8:25 am PST
Hey, I've eaten at 3000 bbq joints and if there's one thing I've discovered that almost to a rule the good ones are NOT open on mondays. So enjoy your holiday!

Hey barbeque pigs...I mean I mean guys that like to EAT barbequed pigs, glad to see youâ??re probing the local geography for good places. A few more to consider: Short Sugars in Eden,NC; Country BBQ in Greensboro (Great pork shoulders....suweeeee!); Bridges BBQ Lodge in Shelby,NC; Wilburâ??s BBQ in Goldboro;Hurseys in Burlington(catered the recent Governors inaugural)...and the list goes on. Between eastern NC, Memphis (the rib capitol of the known universe) and Mobile I've eaten at 112 different restaurants or tin shacks with glowing embers and smoke wafting out the top. Sounds like another trip or two for you guys! Good luck, safe travels and get your cholesterol checked!!

Saw your story in the Tennessean. Sorry to hear you weren't going to cross the Mississippi River. McClard's Bar-B-Q in Hot Springs, Ark, is some of the best anywhere. Enjoy the rest of your trip!

Got to go to Moonlight BBQ in Owensboro, KY (BBQ Capital of the World.) Only 2 hours north of Nashville. Your trip and experience will not be complete without some burgoo and mutton. You won't regret it.

Sam Hagam said:   January 17, 2009 1:17 pm PST
Don't limit BBQ to ribs, chopped pork and gooey sauce. I've tried it everywhere but nothing beats the unique suace and style of cooking found in a 60 mile radius of Tompkinsville, Ky. One small carry out has ben c,oned into approximately 60 copycats. Please go tp this site: http://www.fabuloustravel.com/component/resource/article/391/21783 If possible please try to go to Hestand, KY. Sam Hagan

Hey, Art is from Russellville and he should have mentioned Bunyuns in Florence-always my first stop when I visit my sister-someone may have already suggested it, but I did not read all of the emails. I am jealous of your trip-I love BBQ too-there is a Shell station at the Bates Turkey exit on 65 South that has a wonderful BBQ shack on the side-it is delicious and a heck of a lot cheaper and better smoked turkey and bbq than Bates. Have fun-can't wait to see your weights after the trip-read about you in our Nashville paper. MEP

Having lived in memphis for 20 year a visitor of Rendezvous well I would not waste my time going there now as it as lost quality, you hit the good ones in Memphis. Now try the Moonlite in Owensboro KY for some great mutton and western ky burgoo..Enjoyed the article in the Tennessean today

Steve Bilyeu said:   January 17, 2009 6:40 am PST
If you ever do this again, go to Kentucky and try the mutton and burgoo. Good luck on on your trip. I enjoyed your article in The Tennessean today.

Hey. Just letting the anonymous person know that I was no in the Greenville news because I was outside throwing up. I actually got food poisoned at "The Pitt" in Raleigh, NC. But I'm back at 100 percent now. You can check out the full story in our blog. Billy the Kid just posted a story on it.

You may want to try the Hickory Pig in Gainesville Ga. too. It's a nub knuckler, tonsil tickler for sure.

Yall should have brought David Bailey along for the rest of the trip. What a character! If nothing else, you should have at least jacked his tie. Stay safe fellas

Hey BBQ World. Drury -- To answer your question the reason their are no pre-trip stats for Sparky is because she is not traveling with us on our journey and I'm not brave enough to ask a woman her weight. ha Camille -- Yes we have been lucky enough to receive a few meals for free and everyone has been EXTREMELY nice to us. Thank you for all of your time and support!!! -Bus Driver

I had had the pleasure of working all over NC for 2 years and I am fromm SC. I have eaten BBQ all over both states from the hills to the sea. If you get anywhere near Greenville NC, you absolutely must try Pete Jones Skylight BBQ, it will be one of the most unique stops you make, it is only about 10 minutes south of Greenville NC and it is the best BBQ that you may ever try. they only do the basics, whole hog BBQ, coleslaw and corn griddle cake. Only 2 choices, BBQ sandwich with slaw or BBQ boat, BBQ, slaw & corn griddle cake. In regards to SC BBQ, the Hemmingway area is the home of the original BBQ in the US. Browns is supposed to be one of the best. Maurices is the worst of the 3 Bessinger Brothers, but the other 2 are in Charleston, but Maurices Piggy Park in Columbia is worth a visit, but only for a sandwich and maybe buy a few bottles of sauce. As a previous poster stated, Hudsons in Lexington SC is a great choice.

RubMeSmokeMePullMe said:   January 13, 2009 10:17 am PST
Hey guys do yourselves a favor skip the meal at Maurice's and just get the sauce in Columbia, SC, the food is sub par. Keep going down I-20 and stop at Hudson's Smokehouse in Lexington, SC just 3-4 miles off interstate. Its a Great Story line Lexington, NC vs. Lexington, SC. I envy ya'll

Carol said:   January 13, 2009 9:55 am PST
Was just in Lexington for a family gathering.....Ate at Lexington Barbeque (aka HoneyMonk), the best BBQ there is.......Enjoy your journey. Go Gators!!!!!!

Hip, hip, hooray! You've got a good thing going. Saw your article in the B'ham paper this wknd. while in B'ham. Your blog is awsome. You may as well plan a 2nd trip cause you can't visit all the good places on one. Must try = Williams Bros. in Marietta, Ga. Happy grazing!

Melynda said:   January 13, 2009 9:44 am PST
you can stop your research in Lexington, NC...you won't find BBQ any better anywhere!!!! Living in Florida I MISS IT and bring it home as often as I can (in a cooler)

Camille Spratling said:   January 13, 2009 8:23 am PST
Impressive website, and nice work with the media coverage! Has anyone offered you free bbq yet?

DruryEllard said:   January 12, 2009 6:43 pm PST
A couple of things--1.) At the Greentop be sure to put the chopped pork into the grilled bread--don't mess around with one of those regular buns 2.) Why are Sparky's pre-trip stats missing? 3.) please give us a personal bbq history moment for each of your resumes. Happy Tasting! D

Nathan Monk said:   January 12, 2009 6:12 pm PST
I would really like to thank you guys for coming to eat today at Lexington BBQ. I hope you have a great road trip and learn alot about the tradition and hard work thats put into real bbq.

You fellas are so lucky! The homefolks are enjoying hearing about the great places you are viisting. The BBQ nation awaits your next review. Happy Trails!

I mean seriously; these people put ketchup in bbq sauce and feed it to innocent children! They are capable of anything - be careful. Allen & Sons and "That BBq Place" in Chapel Hill are very good... but you really do need to make it to Goldsboro for the great stuff.

madurobob said:   January 12, 2009 2:05 pm PST
Get thee with haste to Goldsboro! There is no bbq to be found anywhere near Lexington

Lillie Kelly said:   January 12, 2009 11:46 am PST
Nice course, guys! You will be going to some of my very favorite places. I look forward to reading your reviews. Have a great trip and truly enjoy learning about the South at its best!

Guys...Atlanta offers a bit of a BBQ challenge in that there are a lot of chain type restaurants around and it's hard to find really good BBQ in Atlanta proper. My favorite is One Star Ranch in Alpharetta. They serve Texas style BBQ which will be rather unique on your journey through Carolina, Memphis, and Alabama BBQ styles. Here's the website for One Star Ranch...http://www.onestarranch.com/home.html

When you've finished eating at the original Dreamland in T'town, the dogs that hang out around the door will lick the sauce off your fingers! No need for those wet wipey things! ROLL TIDE!
